Mushroom Magic grain bags are filled with hydrated and sterilized red milo grain, perfectly formulated for maximizing quality and yield. Red milo is a little more expensive than most of the other options you might find out there, but after using just about every type of grain over the last several years we have discovered there's no point in using or selling anything else. As any successful commercial mushroom grower will tell you, it all starts with the grain; if you don't have great grain to colonize, every other step will be compromised.

We use Unicorn-brand 10T bags for their durability, size and ease of use. They include a self-healing injection port and a 0.2 micron filter patch to allow for contaminate-free inoculation and proper air exchange.

We clean our grains thoroughly and soak them for 16-24 hours before being boiled. They're then drained and set on racks to air dry. The grains are measured out into 3 pound bags and pressure sterilized before being sealed and shipped to you.

To ensure sterility we monitor bag temperatures from start to finish every run and ensure sterilization temperatures are achieved with every batch. A control bag is held from each run to ensure proper sterilization was attained and the grain bags fall within quality control standards.

We recommend using 5-10cc liquid culture per 3 lb grain bag, and 1 lb of colonized grain per 2-4 lbs of sterile substrate.

NOTE: When shipping bags it's always a good idea to let your sterilized grain bags sit for 1-2 weeks before use. This will expose any issues that may have occurred during shipping and prevent wasted spore or culture syringes. If you do find that your product is compromised, please contact us.

What you'll need for inoculation:

• Grain Bag
• Alcohol wipe, or isopropyl alcohol and a cotton ball
• Syringe with liquid culture or spores*
• (recommended) Latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and spray bottle

Instructions:

• Prepare space:
  • It's best to work in a pet-free room without any fans moving the air around - we want things as clean as possible to minimize the chance of contamination
  • Wipe down your work surface with alcohol, using a paper towel and spray bottle
• Innoculate:
  • Wipe down the bag with alcohol using a spray bottle and gloved hands, avoiding the filter patch
  • Gently rock spore syringe to evenly disperse spores
  • Sterilize the injection needle on your syringe with a lighter and allow to cool briefly
  • Wipe injection port with alcohol wipe or cotton ball dipped in alcohol
  • Inject bag with spores from a spore syringe or liquid culture (minimum of 1cc/pound of media), then cover with Scotch tape
  • Store the bag off the ground in a place with dim lighting - absolutely no direct sunlight - at 70-78F (warmer is better) - colonization normally takes 2-4 weeks
  • When the front of the bag is colonized (white in color) massage, shake and/or knead the bag to break up the media and more evenly distribute the mycelilum
  • When the bag is completely colonized/white, it's ready to mix with your desired fruiting substrate
